Project #3050 - Literature and the Environment

ENGL 2284:  Literature and the Environment

Writing Assignment #1

Readings

Howard Zahniser, from “The Wilderness Act of 1964,”

Lyndon B. Johnson, “Remarks at the Signing of the Highway Beautification Act of 1965,”

You task is to analyze each of your selected texts as a means of demonstrating your understanding of each piece.  Issues to consider including as part of your analysis for each of your chosen essays might include but are not limited to the following:

·         What is the author arguing?

·         What writing tools is the author using to convince his/her audience?

·         Who is the writer’s audience?

·         Who is not the writer’s audience?

·         What appeals is the author using to connect with his/her reader?

·         What is the author not choosing to include in his/her argument?

·         Do the omissions in the argument weaken the author’s points?

·         What are the strengths of the essay?

·         What are the weaknesses of the essay?

·         What is the historical context for the essay, that is how does the time period in which the piece was written factor into our understanding of the essay and its contents?

·         What is the cultural context for the essay, that is how does the mood or attitude of the time period during which it was written factor into our understanding of the essay and its contents?

·         What is the authorial context for the essay, that is how does the person writing the piece and his/her personal history and/or his/her other work factor into our understanding of the essay and its contents?

·         What kinds of connections can you make personally to the issues being discussed in the essay?

·         What kinds of connections can you not make personally to the issues being discussed in the essay?

·         Are there other people you know who can make connections to the essay’s content and what are those connections?

·         Feel free to also make any other observations and/or connections to the chosen pieces.

-Your work should be arranged in TWO distinct ½’s, that is you do not need to connect the two analyses of the two chosen works.  Think of this assignment, then, as having a Part A, which addresses/analyzes your first chosen essay; and a Part B, which addresses/analyzes your second chosen essay.  To make a connection between the essays complicates the assignment, and it is unnecessary.

-Your work should be 5-6 single-spaced pp.as a MINIMUM length; use standard formatting and font choices.  Remember that clever students not only meet, but often exceed, MINIMUM  assignment requirements.

-I might also suggest that you do some free-writing on a 3-4 of the essays to begin, and then you look at the thoughts you have collected and use your free-writing to choose your two best essays for the assignment.   What I am suggesting, then, is how best to choose wisely vs. choose too quickly.
