This is to be a synthesis of what you have learned this semester in this course, so be creative in your choice of questions, but also make sure to have a central topic that “connects” all three of the questions/ideas you are commenting on. Please incorporate as much detail, along with relevant examples, terms, people, and concepts in order to make your paper both informative, as well as interesting to read.

.Discuss the concepts of ethnocentrism and cultural relativism, and explain the nature of the relationship between the two. How did our understanding of the two concepts change as anthropology was becoming an established discipline?

.Discuss the relationship between ethnography and ethnology. Explain the historical development of each, with special reference to the early European explorers and anthropological evolutionists.

.What kinds of work would applied anthropologists pursue? Provide one example of applied work for each of the subfields of anthropology. What aspects of anthropology make it uniquely valuable in application to social problems?

.Discuss the concept of culture as it is understood by anthropologists.  What are the various components and other aspects of culture, and how do these interrelate?

.Describe the biological features that humans share with primates and how they provide a biological basis for cultural attributes.  How is human culture similar to and different from aspects of non-human primate life?

.How is culture adaptive? How may culture be maladaptive? Why is it important to understand that culture can be both adaptive and maladaptive?

.What are the techniques used in doing ethnographic fieldwork? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

.What is the difference between emic and etic perspectives? Why might an anthropologist want to use both strategies when conducting ethnographic fieldwork?

.What are the ethical obligations of anthropologists working in foreign countries? How might these affect the types of research that anthropologists are able to conduct?
