2. Global Stratification

(a) Discuss how colonialism created global stratification between rich countries and poor countries, using the film Rabbit-Proof Fence(Netflix) or other example.

(b) Discuss how neocolonialism creates inequality between rich and poor countries using a specific example.

 

3. Race and Ethnic Stratification

(a) Describe the system of racial-ethnic stratification in the U.S.

(b) Discuss the racial stratification system in therms of the idea that some racial-ethnic groups are at the bottom because they have been colonized and other racial-ethnic groups are in the middle because they are immigrants while whites are at the top because they are the colonizers.

(c) Using the film, The Color of Fear, discuss modern racism, including blaming the victim and color-blind racism.

(d) Discuss the myth of Asians as the model minority and how it justifies racial stratification.

(e) Discuss an example of stereotyping and institutional racism and how they justify racial stratification.

(f) Using Peggy McIntosh’s article, “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” define white privilege. Using one example from her list, describe how it privileges whites and disadvantages people of color.

 

4. Gender Stratification

(a) Describe the system of gender stratification in the U.S.

(b) Using the film Southern Comfort (YouTube), discuss how gender is socially constructed.

(c) Discuss what the film suggests about the relationship between each of the following?

(d) Using the article, “The Male Privilege Checklist,” define male privilege. Using one example from the list, discuss how it privileges men and disadvantages women.

(f) Using the concept of gender segregation in jobs, discuss why Latinas earn the least.

(g) Using the interview with Lilly Ledbetter(YouTube), discuss the impact of women’s unequal pay.

(h) Discuss how the unequal division of labor in the home benefits men.

(i) Using the excerpts of interviews with feminists of color (markers.com), discuss how race and gender interline to shape the experience of women of color.

 

5. Sexuality

(a) Discuss how sex is socially constructed in the U.S.

(b) Using the chapter, “The Orgasm Gap,” discuss what the Douglass’ argue is the cause of the orgasm gap between women and men.

(c) Use one of the four myths from the chapter and discuss how it creates the orgasm gap.

(d) Using the short film, Sex: The Inside Story, describe Douglass’ new theory of female sexual anatomy.

(e) Discuss how the view that women and men have the same sexual anatomy and functions would end the orgasm gap.

(f) Using the film, In My Shoes: stories of youth with LGBT parents (YouTube), discuss how homophobia and heterosexism affects children in LGBT families.

(g) Discuss why children in LGBT families are more accepting of difference than children in heterosexual families.

(h) Discuss how homophobia and heterosexism reinforce the system of male dominance.

 

6. Social Institutions

(a) Choose one social institution and discuss how it reflects and reinforces the social structure.(family, religion, education, health care, the political system, the economy and work)

 

7. Social change

(a) Using bell hooks’ Feminism is for Everybody, discuss the following issues concerning the system of white supremacist capitalist patriarchy and how to change it.

(b) Define both patriarchy and feminism.

(c) What does the suggest is the first step for chaining the system?

(d) Using Feminism is for Everybody, discuss one of the following issues in therms of gender inequality and how to change it:  

- Reproductive rights (ch.5)  

- “Women and Work” (ch.9) and the Lilly Ledbetter interview (makers.com)  

- Beauty and the female body (ch. 6)  

- Violence in the family (e.g., intimate partner abuse and child abuse) (ch.11)
