Project #31022 - Discussion Questions

Please read the Practicing OB exercise, "Motivating Nurses at a Hospital" on page 246, and respond to the following questions:

1. After interviewing the nurses, you found that they believed no one cared how well they were doing. What theories could help explain the problem? What would you recommend the hospital should do to resolve this problem?

2. Hospital officials tell you that the nurses are well paid, adding to your surprise about low morale. However, your interviews reveal that the nurses themselves feel otherwise. Why might this occur and why is this a problem? What could be done to help?

3. "I'm bored with my job," one highly experienced nurse tells you, and you believe that she speaks for many within the hospital. What could be done to make the jobs more interesting to those who perform them? What are the limitations of your plan? Would it work equally well for other members of the hospital staff (including clerical and janitorial staff?)

4. What other real life experience do you have in regard to similar motivation issues?

Consider:  Kingdom Behavior:  "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." (Colossians 3:23-24 NIV).
