Please read the unit outline description of this assignment first in order to understand the criteria we use to assess your work.

Select ONE. Research and write a response. Note the following directions:

i) At least TWO research items (such as journal articles or book chapters) of good academic quality beyond the set reading(s) (the pdfs) for the week must be found and used in the essay.

ii) The relevant set reading should also be closely read, and some use of it, such as making quotations or discussion of its statements, should be apparent in your response.

1. Mill argues that freedom of expression in a society is very important. Some groups of people express and exchange ideas and information about suicide. Should they be completely free to communicate their ideas, even if they might be aiding harm or death? Should such groups be free from government intervention (eg. policing or censorship)? Explain your view with reference to Mill’s views on liberties.

2. Discuss whether you think Sartre’s existential philosophy means that individuals have to be aware and responsible for their choices and decisions to such an extent that they could not be content or happy – or alternatively, describe a ‘happy’ existentialist. Research further, but also make sure you refer to the Sartre reading.

3. Provide what you think are the three most powerfulcontemporary examples of De Beauvoir’s understanding of women as ‘other’ in western societies. Make sure you connect them to De Beauvoir’s text The Second Sex, and explain why you think they are the most significant contemporary forms of ‘othering’.

4. If our contemporary society (across the last half century) is becoming somewhatmore aware of the suffering of animals, then is it also becoming more compassionate in general? Write an essay explaining the extent to which the sort of awareness Singer outlines is or is notconnected to particular or generally wider concerns for human suffering.
