Project #3213 - confederates in the attic essay

History- Confederates in the Attic (Dispatches from the unfinished civil war)

Author: Tony Horwitz

Using a narritive format(essay), please answer the following questions. Be sure to utilize direct text references(cite them in parenthetical format)

1)Tony Horwitz sets out to investigate why his great-grandfather, an immigrant, became obsessed by the american civil war. Does he ever answer this question? Why are so many americans with no blood tie to the war nonetheless fascinated by it?

2)Tony Horwitz suggests that people become civil war reenactors to escape their own time and experiance the "period rush" of entering another era. Why is it that many people find the 1860s to be more appealing than our own time period?

3)Since the book was published, Tony Horwitz has been criticized by both right-wing and left-wing southerners who think he is either too critical of confederates heritage or too supportive of it. Overall, do you think he is fair? why or why not?
