essay1

For this assignment, you will present the requirements for entering and maintaining membership in the academic discourse community here at SMC. You can consider this mini-essay as the first part of your research paper. For details on the research paper, click HERE.

In an essay of at least 2 pages (typed & double spaced, MLA format), present the most important requirements you think are necessary for entry into the academic discourse community. You must also defend your requirements, proving to your audience that the requirements you present are absolutely necessary to become a member of this discourse community.

To assist you in your draft, consider addressing the following questions:

  1. What are the most important requirements for entry into the academic discourse community?

  2. Why are these requirements so necessary and so important, especially for your chosen student group?

  3. How, specifically, do these requirements help a student gain entry? What examples & evidence can you offer?

  4. What would happen to a student (specifically from your chosen student group) who didn't have this requirement? What examples & evidence can you offer?

Essay2

This essay will focus on the specific student group you will examine for your research essay.

In an essay of at least 2 pages, you will both describe and define the student group you are examining, AND reveal the challenges these students face when attempting to gain entry into the academic discourse community.

In your essay, consider addressing the following:

  1. Name the specific student group you are examining. This can be their official name, the name they use to identify each other, or both. Which ever label you decide to use for this group, be sure to be respectful and maintain consistency throughout the essay.

  2. What are the qualities and characteristics of this group? Who are they? How are they identified? What evidence can you present to support and prove your ideas?

  3. What are some of the main challenges this group faces when trying to become a member of the academic discourse community? Why/How do these pose challenges for them? What evidence can you present to support your ideas?

  4. Why is this group of students not fulfilling the requirements you presented in Mini-Essay #1? What may be holding them back and keeping them out? How are these lack of requirements keeping these students out of the academic discourse community? What specific evidence can you present to support and prove your ideas?

essay3

This is the last part of the research essay and should incorporate ideas from Mini-Essay 1 & Mini-Essay 2 and will focus on the specific resources available to help the student group you identified in Mini-Essay #2.

For this final part of the research essay, you will research and evaluate campus student resources. Then, you will consider all the information you have presented in Mini-Essay 1 & Mini-Essay 2 to determine and argue to what extent campus resources are assisting students in gaining entry into the academic discourse community.

Before beginning this assignment, you will need to perform some research on the campus resources that are available to support the student group you identified in Mini-Essay 2. To do this, you can begin by checking out the SMC webpage and specific links such as “Student Services,” “Campus Resources,” “Friends and Community” and similar webpages. You will also want to visit the resource itself to interview its members, its workers, and/or students who use the resource. You can also request pamphlets, handouts and other reading materials to use as outside sources.

Remember, resources do not just have to be places, they can also be people such as mentors, professors, counselors, etc.

Once you have sufficiently researched various resources on campus related to your student group, you must determine to what extent these resources are, basically, working.

To do this, you will want to address the following in an essay of at least 3 pages:

  1. What resources are available on campus? If there are not any, you will need to state this clearly (and be VERY CERTAIN there really, truly aren’t any resources on campus for your student group).

  2. What is the purpose or mission statement of this resource? In other words, what do THEY hope to achieve with their presence on campus?

  3. HOW does this resource attempt to integrate students into the academic discourse community? Refer to the requirements you addressed in Mini-Essay 1. Which of those requirements are they helping students to fulfill?

  4. Is it working? Based on your research, interviews, and observations, are these resources enough, and/or is it doing enough to integrate your chosen student group into the academic discourse community? Why or why not?

  5. Optional: If resources are lacking in any way, what should be done to improve them?
