Project #32526 - Sociology

You are to read both Symbol: The Basic Element of Culture and Socialization and the Power of Advertising. I want you to give responses to each reading that are substantive and engaged with the information, along with incorporating the themes from Consuming Kids. ( I attached the 2 documents and the link to the movie is - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hIAvD0hx_E)

Like I said in class, you don’t have to touch on everything. However, if you are to focus one issue from each (or connections to each), make sure that you tie it together sufficiently and engage with the information. That might mean using a particular sociological perspective to expound on those themes, critiquing the themes from a sociological viewpoint, or asking for further clarification on the themes of the movies.

You can write about each piece separately (w/incorporation of the movie) or together. However I want two pages in total of writing from this assignment, at the very least. Feel free to write more, however try to keep it under 5 pages in total (everything double spaced). Below you will find questions that you can answer in your paper or will guide you in your responses. You do not have to use some or any of these questions to write your responses but you may find them useful in how to think about each reading and how to connect them. (Don't just answer the questions, they should just be included in the work)

While this memo is informal and is meant for me to understand how you are thinking about the information presented, I am grading for how substantive your thought process is about the information. So while I am asking you to be brief (min 2.5 pages to 5 pages double spaced), I also want you to be thorough with your thoughts.

Symbol: The Basic Element of Culture

1. Why does White argue that a deaf mute unable to communicate symbolically is not fully human? What opposing argument might be made? What position would White take in the pro-choice versus pro-life abortion controversy?

2. Because the reality we experience is based on a particular system of symbols, how do we tend to view members of other cultures? What special efforts are needed to overcome the tendency to treat people of different cultures as less worthy than we are?

Socialization and the Power of Advertising

1. What does Kilbourne mean when she says that advertising  “sells much more than products”? How, for example, does advertising influence our values and lifestyles?

2. Belgium, Denmark, Norway, and other countries ban all television and radio advertising directed at children. Should the United States pass similar legislation?

Consuming Children

1. Do you think this kind of market research is ethical? professionally responsible? Why or why not, specifically?

2. What types of values are being sold to children in commercial culture? What role do you think marketing has played in shaping children’s values and aspirations?

3. Why is play important? In what specific ways are media threatening children’s play? How, precisely, are children’s play and creativity limited and threatened by media exposure, commercial programming, and character tie-ins?
