Project #32669 - Lock

Instructions: Please write a 4-6 page paper on the topic below. Your paper should be double-spaced and use reasonable font and margin sizes. Use quotations and citations from Locke to support your claims, but also explain all passages that you quote and all key points in your own words. I strongly recommend that you not use any sources other than Locke’s and Hobbes’s texts your class notes, and your own mind. But if you do draw upon other sources in writing your paper, then you must cite them and be careful not to follow them too closely.

Topic: According to Locke, when and why is resistance to or revolution against a government or a particular law justified? Do you agree with Locke about this? Why or why not? Use examples of (real or imaginary) laws or political regimes to illustrate your points. In the course of your discussion, be sure to explain how Locke answers the following questions: 1) What is the purpose of government? 2) What makes a particular government legitimate or a particular law just? 3) What gives someone an obligation to obey a particular government or a particular law? (You may find it helpful to contrast Locke's answers to these questions with Hobbes's, but you need not do so. In any case, your main focus should be on Locke's views and your evaluation of them).

References: To cite Locke, put the chapter and section numbers in parentheses at the end of the sentence. For example: (Second Treatise, chapter 7, §87) refers to chapter 7, section 87. To cite Hobbes, put the chapter and paragraph numbers from our edition in parentheses at the end of the sentence. For example: (Leviathan, chapter 13, ¶1) refers to chapter 13, paragraph 1. Paragraph numbers in the Leviathan are in brackets at the beginning of each paragraph. You do not need to give full bibliographic references to the Second Treatise or the Leviathan. But if you cite other works in addition to these, then you do need to put full bibliographic references to those works either in footnotes or in a separate bibliography.
