# Project #32934 - Lab 4 Graphing

Guidelines for constructing a graph

1. Title the graph.

2. Draw in or darken the lines that will represent the X and Y axes and label each axis with the varying quantity, including the units of the quantity.

3. Establish appropriate and convenient scales for each axis based on the data given, that is, the data plotted on each axis must fit within the borders of the axis and the edge of the paper. The appropriate scale depends on the range of the given data (lowest to highest) and the number of subdivisions on your graph paper.

4. Locate the data points by moving along the X axis until the X value is reached and then move vertically to the Y value. Mark each point with a dot.

5. Draw the best fitting curve through the points. Even when the graph is a straight line, the line will not generally pass through all the points. The best-fitting line will be simultaneously closest to all points; it may be that it actually goes through none of them. Although made-up data may fit a line exactly, in experimental data, there is always some error in the measurement process, and thus a perfect fit may not be obtained.

A beaker of water containing two thermometers, Celsius and Fahrenheit, is heated slowly beginning with ice-cold water until it reaches boiling. Table #1 contains the recorded temperature measurements. Establish convenient scales for Celsius degrees on the horizontal (X) axis and Fahrenheit degrees on the vertical (Y) axis. Plot your data on a full sheet of graph paper and circle each data point so that it stands out.

Draw the best line through your data and answer the following questions.

1. When the temperature is 40 Celsius, what is the Fahrenheit equivalent?

2. When the outside temperature is 75 Fahrenheit, what is the Celsius equivalent?
