Approximately 1.5 single spaced pages

Here is your chance, as an English student, a prospective researcher, and a citizen to think about an area and question you are interested in knowing more about.  College is an unusual time; we actually have time off to learn things that are of social, economic, emotional, spiritual, and political significance.  Who could be luckier than you, truly?

What I would like you to do for this assignment is to form a question or a problem that you would like to examine in more detail, something that you are curious about to the point that you want to learn more and research on your own as well as work on in a research group, that has social, economic, cultural, political, artistic, educational, environmental, or literary significance to a large population of people.   It is imperative that your interest NOT be shared with something you are already working on for another class (or have worked on in the past!) UNLESS you communicate such with me and we come to a working understanding of how that will be further developed.

I would like you to begin by describing the question in some detail that you want to investigate.  Your focus should be narrow enough to research in eight days time (planning, again, about 3-4 hrs/day), and broad enough to support finding at least seven academic sources.  Your final project will illustrate your understanding of the issue in a significant and meaningful way through the use of differing genres of writing (more on this next week).

After you have described the issue that you would like to pursue, please explain what it is that you do already know about this issue/question.  If you aren’t at all knowledgeable at this point, I strongly suggest doing a little bit of reading from credible sources on the internet (at least 1-2 articles—real articles, not Wikipedia!--to give you some background information and help you hone your question).  Please cite any and all research you use to inform us of what you understand, and be as specific as you can about what you hope to learn.  Tell us, over the course of this entry, what it is that you want to understand?  Who do you see as the stakeholders (ie, who cares?)  What is compelling about this issue from a larger scale perspective?

As this will be an inquiry-based project and not an argument-based project, you will be researching from your own curiosity.  You don’t know the answers (good researchers rarely do!); consider yourself an investigative reporter, set to examine an issue from many standpoints.  You will be doing much more than simply argue a side of an issue; rather, you will be more of an investigative researcher, looking for a deep understanding of the issue you propose to illuminate.

Please go with your passion and interest on this project.  It is critical that you find something worth throwing your heart and mind into!  Consider something that might be relevant to the sort of work you see yourself doing both during and after your time at the University.

When grading proposals, I will be looking for clarity of intent, thoughtfulness, attention to detail,  and a thorough and considered approach.  I want to clearly see what your intentions are, and be convinced that you have a solid enough proposal to send you forward in your research.  If you use sources to explain what you know about the issue, you will include citations at the end of your entry!
