Consumer Health & Ethical Issues in the Public Health Setting

Part 1: Visit the website, Healthfinder, the Department of Health and Human Services information center (www.healthfinder.gov).Browse the news archive (i.e., click on the Health News tab on the left-hand side of the screen. You will then see “News Archive” also on the left-hand side of the screen--click that link). (1) How many news releases discuss the 10 leading causes of death? Provide some examples of such topics. (2) Do you think that such websites can help Americans become better-informed consumers of health? Why or why not? (3) Do you think that telemedicine-based projects, such as that described by Boulos et al. (2007), are effective in producing better-educated health consumers? Why or why not? (4) Explain and/or suggest one or two additional/alternative programs.

Part 2: (1) Discuss your impressions of Case 3. (2) Based on JMU’s eight key questions as part of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) presented in my mini-lecture slides and reviewed in this video, what ethical issues are presented in each assigned reading for today? Provide an example of how you would apply each of the eight key questions in your future career? (3) Who should have access to our health status/DNA info and how should it be used (e.g., employers in making hiring decisions, insurance companies in deciding coverage/rates)? (4) Who should own and control health status/DNA info (e.g., Individuals? The government?)? Explain your response.
