Project #34478 - Business Communication 4

Part A
1. Revise the following sentences, making them more positive and less accusatory or demeaning to the reader:
a) Since you did not include the receipt, we cannot give you a refund.
b) Surely you don’t think we can act on a complaint two years after the purchase?
c) We suspect that you dropped the laptop and damaged the components.
d) You haven’t survived in business the required six months, and therefore we can-not give you credit.
e) It’s too risky for us to give someone like you credit since, frankly, your credit rat-ing leaves much to be desired.

4. Indicate whether you would use a direct or indirect structure in the following situations:
a) Telling a fellow employee that you will have the information she requested a week later than promised
b) Turning down a request for a contribution to a local charity
c) Informing a customer that the repairs to his DVD player are no longer covered by warranty
d) Notifying your boss that the spare parts room in your factory requires reorganizing
e) Refusing a request from a community organization to act as master of ceremonies at an upcoming retirement dinner

Part B
Format the letter correctly - letterhead or heading, inside address, date, salutation, complimentary closing, etc. You may have to invent some information.
9. An out-of-town friend has asked you to see his son, Paul Dubois, a young college graduate who wants a job in sales. As the sales manager of Lancer Foods you agree to talk to Paul about his plans, knowing that a junior sales position will soon become available. During the interview, it becomes clear that, although Paul has a pleasant, outgoing personality, he has no sales experience. More importantly, he has no record of work or other experience to indicate that he is hard- working and reliable. Since Paul is going home the next day, you promise to write to him within two weeks. When you discuss the job opening with your personnel manager, you find that other applicants are more qualified. Write a letter of refusal to Paul.
