1. Savings

Read “The Gender Gap in Access to Finance” from Private Sector Development and the related news report “New World Bank Study Finds Large Gender Gaps in Access to Formal Banking” from the World Bank website.

a. Why is being able to save important for the poor? Explain.

b. What is the nature of the gender gap in access to finance (using whether or not someone owns an account as a measure)? What is the average gender gap in the world as a whole? What is the average gender gap in developing countries? How large is the gap when we only consider the poor (those living cross the globe below the US $ 2 per day poverty line)?

c. Consider the gender difference in using the accounts that we discussed in class. Do you think it conflicts with the observed gender gap in owning an account? Explain.

d. What are the factors that contribute to the gender gap in holding a savings account? List the first four reasons mentioned in “The Gender Gap in Access to Finance”.

e. Consider the main points presented in the article, as well as what we discussed in class. What are the potential ways to increase bank account holdings? List at least three ways to achieve the outcome.

Read “Small companies in poor countries: Looking for a Google” from The Economist and answer the following questions.

b. According to the fourth paragraph, what do we know about the difference in returns to capital between big firms and small firms in those seven African countries?

c. Do you think the previous observations are inconsistent with each other? Why?

d. Why aren’t the small firms growing fast? Recall what we have discussed in class and provide an explanation.

e. What can be done to help the small business? List the suggestions mentioned in the article.
