Project #3507 - Gender and Age Discrimiantion Memorandum

DIRECTIONS:

You are the human resources director for Comet Industrial Products, a business that has 1,000 employees located at 15 facilities in 15 different states in the country.  It has come to the attention of the CEO that some managers in the organization are not as familiar with some of the discrimination in employment legislation as they should be.  The CEO asks you to prepare a memorandum for all managers on gender and age discrimination and on sexual harassment. 

With respect to gender and age discrimination, the CEO wants you to briefly explain the gender and age discrimination laws and who is covered under the laws.  With respect to gender:  How is work valued (include explanations) so men and women are treated equally and what should managers do to ensure they are in compliance with the law.  With respect to age:  what must managers do to make sure they are in compliance when they hire, promote, transfer, layoff, or fire employees?

Sexual harassment:  the CEO wants you to provide a definition for the term and what behavior is covered under the law.  There are a number of requirements that have to be met before an employee can claim they are a victim of sexual harassment.  The CEO wants you to include these requirements with an explanation of each one in the memo.  What problems could managers face when dealing with this issue?

Policy:  The CEO is concerned that managers and employees are not getting sufficient information on these issues.  The CEO has been told that new hires watch videos on these topics after they are hired.  There is no follow-up.  The CEO is not sure what managers learn or how they learn it.  The CEO wants you to rewrite the policy on distribution of information on these topics.  What would you do?  You are also asked to establish a policy for handling complaints.  How would you do this?   

PAGE LENGTH within the Memorandum:

Gender = ½ - ¾ page

Age = ½ - ¾ page

Sexual harassment = ½ - 3/4th 

Policy suggestions = 1 – 2 pages

FORMAT:  Set up your answers in the form of a memo.  Use whatever headings are needed to make your memo easy to read. Use references. Be sure to include a reference page (separate sheet of paper).  Your references should be from academic sources or professional publications such as HRMagazine.  Newspapers may NOT be used.
