Project #37740 - sociology: marriage and family class

Please visit the web site of Professor Elaine Hatfield, a psychologist who got international notoriety for her studies of love and intimacy in the 1970s when US Senator William Proxmire singled her out for wasting tax payers’ money.

After you’ve read her essay called “The Golden Fleece Award: Love’s Labours (Almost) Lost,” write a persuasive essay which address the following questions:

  • Is research on love – specifically, issues of equity (fairness) in romantic relationships -- needed? Why/why not?
  • Can issues such as love be studied scientifically? Why/why not? First, you should discuss what it means to say that something will be studied “scientifically.”
  • What would the American public say today if Professor Hatfield was pitted against a US Senator who claimed her research was a waste of money? In other words, if a newspaper poll were conducted, who would “win,” Professor Hatfield or the Senator? Are there different social and cultural conditions today, compared to the mid 1970s when Professor Hatfield was awarded the “Golden Fleece Award,” that would affect public opinion?
