Discussion Question: Week 4  ( You do NOT have to answer this discussion question, as I have already done so, but you will have to write a 50 word response to both classmates discussion questions listed below highlighted in RED. I have listed it to give you an ideal as to the what the discussion question is about and what you’ll be referencing the responses.

 

Recruitment

The traditional approach for identifying qualified applicants is often driven by old traditions like looking at resumes, degree, years of experience, and even looks. What other, more quantifiable measures might be used when hiring a new employee? Be specific.

Response to classmate #1. As the Hiring Manager for a company that needs to fill a position, I would consider the needs of the company before looking for a new hire. Come up with a good job description. Knowing what you need and/or have to have in advance will only help you screen for the best qualified applicants. Next, I would make sure there were several applicants to choose from if at all possible. “In this age of online social and professional networking, the chances are, you and your employees are instantly connected to hundreds, and even thousands, of candidates.” (Heathfield, n.d.). This often takes away from the traditional word or mouth to friends and family, which are not always what the company needs. For example hiring someone just because they are related to the Plant Manager or the Electrical Engineer is not a good choose if they do not meet the qualification that have been set. The online job posting are a lot clearer to me and often you are able to screen without wasting time calling the potential employee in for multiple interviews and find out that they are not qualified. Stickying with what your require for the job it the whole plan to hire what you need. Although, the social scene may not always be the best source, "Things like LinkedIn LinkedIn and Glassdoor have never been more important."
