Project #38249 - American literature

LA0401 Semester 2 Research Project Description of the Research Project

For this course, you must write a paper of 3–5 pages (750–1,000 words) on a theme in the novel Night by Elie Wiesel. In this autobiographical novel, Wiesel writes about his experiences in concentration camps during World War II.

A theme is a universal truth that expresses something about human nature. In other words, a theme reveals something about life—something common to most people, something people can identify with.

Here are some examples of themes in Night:
Death. As you can imagine, a book about prisoners during the Holocaust must deal with death.

Because death eventually comes to everyone, it's most certainly a truth about human nature.

Faith. Wiesel grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family, with Jewish faith and traditions. His incarceration challenged this faith.

Silence. In Night, you'll discover two types of silence: the silence of God and the silence of the victims.

Inhumanity toward other humans. Wiesel discovers inhumanity in the way the prisoners are treated by their captors, in the way the prisoners treat each other, and in the way he realizes that he too is capable of extreme cruelty.

Here's a suggested procedure to follow for writing your paper:

Read pages 774–781 in your online textbook. These pages outline a process for analyzing a novel.

Choose the theme you would like to use for your paper. Read the novel, and take notes on people and events that support the theme you've chosen. Pay attention to what each character says and does. Ask yourself what motivates the person to say or do something. Does this relate to your theme? Be sure to include the page number for each note you make.

Write your thesis statement. Elaborate on the statement to develop an opening paragraph.

Use some or all of the notes you've made to support your thesis statement. Develop a paragraph for each point. Organize these points in a logical order, and back them up with quotes or references to the novel. You must include at least five quotations from the novel.

Write a concluding paragraph in which you restate your thesis and summarize your major points.

Read your paper and analyze it for content and organization. Use the chart on page 779 to help you.

Read your paper again, this time analyzing it for style. Use the chart on page 780 to help you.

Read the paper one more time, this time looking for errors in grammar, usage, spelling, and punctuation.

Submit your paper at the end of the semester.
