The Crucibles

The title of the play is ‘The Crucible’ which means severe test or trial.  The characters in the play also seem to be subjected to high temperatures. The characters of John Proctor who is the main protagonist of the play and Rebecca Nurse refuse to melt down. The theme for  the play is intolerance It talks about the Salem witch trials that had taken place in the Province of Massachusetts Bay during the 1692 and 1693s. cite source Witchcraft is a very hotly debated topic even now even though it does not exist anymore as it used to earlier.

The theme is appropriate with reference to the play as the play is set in a very theocratic society. A theocratic society is one where the state and the Church is one (Atkinson). The religion is a very austere and strict form of Protestantism which is also known as Puritanism (Atkinson). As the nature of the society is a theocratic one the laws of the state and the moral laws are the same things. The soul of an individual and the sin are all matters of public debate. One cannot even think of any kind of a deviation from the social norms.

So any individual whose life does not confirm to those laws is a threat not only to the rule of God and the religion but also towards to the society. Cite source In the Province of Massachusetts or in Salem everything belongs either to God or to the devil. Any dissent is taken as with an association with satanic activity. There is a certain dichotomy, that is associated with this theory and it also works as a basic underlying logic behind all the witch trials. As in the words of Danforth in the third act,” a person is either in favor of the court or he is against the court”.

The witch trials that take place are the ultimate expressions of the intolerance that are present in the community. The witches in the area were hung from the trees and it was the ultimate means of restoring back the purity of the community. This theme is evident in the play throughout and it is the predominant theme in the play. All those who do not comply with the societal norms are branded with the taint of worshipping the devil. Hence it becomes necessary that they must be eliminated from the community. In the play when Betty falls ill everyone accuses her of being possessed by the evil spirits and also accuses Abigail and all the other girls of being involved in witchcraft. When Reverend Hale had arrived Abigail had changed her story and said that Tituba had called upon the devil she was surprised at this announcement but when interrogated under pressure she admitted to it although she had not done such a thing. Both of them had begun to call other girls in the village too as witches.

Later in the story too Elizabeth is accused and caught of indulging in witchcraft as Reverend Hale had found a doll in their house with a needle although she kept on saying that it was not hers, it was Mary who had given it to her still she is arrested. All these incidents prove that there was a general discontent and dissatisfaction in the community and witch trials and accusing each other of being witches was a common way of venting the anger and frustration onto others.
