Identify one variable for each level of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio) in your own organization or another organization in which you are interested. Explain why the variables you identified fit that level of measurement, and explain how the organization might benefit from using data about the variable you identified.  Use the name of the organization you have chosen as part of the title in the subject line of your post.

Note: Not all organizations will benefit from using interval variables. If yours doesn't, just describe an additional variable of one of the other types.

I work in the tire industry, and I use each of these variables, as a plant compounder, on a daily basis. The nominal variable in my industry is one in which my different types of rubber are named. It tells what type of rubber we are producing and what chemicals are found in those rubbers. It serves only as a naming procedure that coincides with the different compounds we produce. One ordinal measurement that I use is in the classification of different types of natural rubber. Natural rubber comes in different grades, 10, 20, and 5. This lets me know how pure that rubber is, and I know that 5 is better than 10, and 10 is better than 20. One type of interval testing I use is for gravities of rubber. I test the black and oil in a given sample and compare that to a certain specification to see how well my dispersion is. The ratio measurement I use is to see if I have a certain type of chemical in my cured rubber samples. If there is an absent of that chemical my reading will be zero. If I have the correct amount it will show up as a higher number on a specific test that we run. This helps because without curatives in rubber then I cannot make a tire the way that it is suppose to be. I have guidelines for each of these, and these variables help me determine if we are within a certain specification, or if we are making a bad product.

The Nominal variable is a naming variable, it is not averaged. Nominal value can have numerical values with no quantitative meaning (Bethel University 2014). Where I work a Nominal variable would be Business Unit names. This example fits because Business Unit names have no measurement. The organization has 3 units Mechanics, Sub, and Final. We use this to identify each Business Unit so when referred to by name we will know what type work takes place.

     The Ordinal variable is a set of values that can be ranked, and we know one value is greater than another which is greater than another, but is not apparent as to how much they differ. Where I work an Ordinal variable would be an employee opinion survey. This example fits because the survey suggests that one value is greater than another. The organization has an opinion survey every three years. The survey asked questions like manager’s performance, benefits, and communications. The employee then ranks each question from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The organization takes the results to improve employee satisfaction.

     The Interval variable is when value differences mean something, and zero does not mean absence of. Where I work Interval variable would be a new hire 90 day evaluation. This example fits because zero has meaning. The organization uses this information to show which area the employee is doing well in, and which area needs some improvement.

     The Ratio variable is when zero means absence of, and you can perform multiplication and division. Where I work Ratio variable would be test board Celsius. This example fits because it helps calculate a resistance reading. The organization uses this to calculate resistance, the Celsius temp at the test board will cause the resistance readings to go up or down, so to have an accurate reading we use this information.

All PROBLEMS below (PROBLEMS  1-3) Need to be 100 words or 3 full/complete sentences.


Use the Student_Data.xls file which consists of 200 MBA students at Whatsamattu U. The file includes variables regarding students’ age, gender, major, GPA, Bachelors GPA, course load, English speaking status, family, weekly hours spent studying. Each of the three assigned problems should be formatted as a one page memo. Answers to all three of the problems should be submitted via the Drop Box as a single Word document with each of the problems clearly labeled. Be sure to include your name on the document itself!

COMPLETE PROBLEM 1: Perform a categorical data analysis on the majors of students enrolled in the MBA program. Report on your findings (100+ words, 3 or more sentences), along with a table showing the frequency distribution and at least one chart (pie chart or bar chart) that illustrates the points raised in your report.

COMPLETE PROBLEM 2: Compute the descriptive statistics for the MBA GPAs of the students. Then, create a frequency distribution & histogram on the GPAs of the students. Use ranges of 2.50-2.75, 2.75-3.00, 3.00-3.25, 3.25-3.50, 3.50-3.75 and 3.75-4.00. Report on your findings (100+ words, 3 or more sentences) along with a table covering the descriptive statistics that are important and at least one chart that illustrates the points raised in your report. 

COMPLETE PROBLEM 3: Compute the descriptive statistics for the weekly hours spent studying. Create a frequency distribution & histogram of the hours spent studying. Use ranges of 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, and 10-12. Report on your findings (100+ words, 3 or more sentences) along with a table covering the descriptive statistics that are important and at least one chart that illustrates the points raised in your report.
