Project #38819 - Master Level - HR Major Needed

Effective Business Partnering

The notion of HR as a strategic partner is still a relatively new concept in the world of business. According to Lawler and Boudreau (2009), this role has only been developed over the past decade (p. 15). Prior to that, HR functioned almost exclusively in clerical and administrative roles, and at times helped to implement procedures dictated by executives and managers. With the emergence of the Strategic Business Partner concept, HR departments are becoming more actively involved in the processes of making and implementing strategic business initiatives and goals.

However, because this role is so new, not all businesses and organizations have readily embraced their HR departments as strategic partners. Some business leaders may not be convinced of the potential benefits of doing so, while others may not fully understand how to build such a partnership. Still others may be wary of change or reluctant to impose new responsibilities on their already-busy HR professionals. In this Assignment, you formulate a cohesive argument in favor of HR as a Strategic Business Partner. You justify this new role of HR by describing how it can improve business effectiveness and success using the materials provided.

For this Assignment, use the following scenario to craft your response:

You are the manager of the HR department at a midsize manufacturing company. The company has received several new contracts from customers who want to purchase considerable amounts of a new product line. This has the potential to lead to opportunities for organizational growth, both physically and financially. Your CEO wants to make sure that these new business contracts are managed effectively and that progress is carefully monitored. She has just returned from a conference where several cohorts had mentioned their adoption of the new business partnering approach to HR. They describe how business partnering has helped identify areas where data-driven decisions have helped lower costs and improve performance within their companies. She feels that this could possibly be a fit for your organization. You personally had been seeking such an opportunity to expand the scope of HR within your company. The CEO asks you to prepare a 2- to 3-page document providing a general overview of how your department could assist with strategic growth. You will make a presentation at an upcoming board meeting.

For this week’s Assignment, address the following in a 2- to 3-page paper (APA Style):

·         Analyze HR’s potential to optimize organizational effectiveness of businesses.

·         Describe the business partnering concept.

o    Highlight the key components of effective business partnering.

o    Give a specific example of how a business partnering initiative would be structured.

o    Analyze potential strengths and weaknesses of this concept.

·         Describe how this concept can optimize the ability to fulfill an organization’s mission, vision, values, and goals. How can it increase organizational effectiveness?

·         Elaborate on how business partnering can promote HR’s new leadership role.
