Project #39374 - Roles of the Court

1.  STUDENT ACTIVITIES – WRITING ASSIGNMENTS  (from Chapter 2)  Briefly answer the questions below:

Research the court system for your state NEVADA. In less than 1 page, write a report stating the following: The State is NEVADA

  • How many levels of courts are there? If possible, provide a diagram. What titles are used for each level? Is there a separate set of courts to handle appeals in criminal cases?

  • What geographical unit (county, city, etc.) is used to organize the trial court?

  • If a person is arrested for a felony (state law) committed in your city: name the court where the charges will be filed; name the court where the trial will be held.

  • Which state appellate court covers the city where you live?

  • If the FBI makes an arrest for a federal crime that was committed in your city, which U.S. District Court will handle the case? Which circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals?

2.  DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (from Chapter 3)  In a half a page, answer the questions below:

 -Very few criminal cases go to trial because of extensive plea bargaining. Are we sacrificing justice for the sake of efficiency? Discuss the fairness of the current system from the perspective of:  prosecution, defense, judge, victim, society.

-Jury duty is considered a civic responsibility yet many people find it burdensome or go out of their way to avoid it. Many other people are excused from jury duty. When jurors reach an unpopular verdict they are frequently derided by the media. What can be done to improve jury duty?
