#1: Discuss "Unix Processes & Job Control”

Reply to other student response on the above Discussion Question: (Elaborate on students response)

#2: A process is simply a program running in UNIX. Processes may run simultaneously and the shell can be used to retrieve information about processes, which are considered jobs by the shell. Jobs are either running, running in the background, or suspended. Job control is important as it can allow for more efficient shell use. For example if one needed to copy a very large file which can be time consuming, he or she could send that process to run in the background to free up the shell for other tasks. Some job control commands are:

CTRL Z - suspend a program

jobs - view a list of running or suspended jobs

kill - halt the job

bg - turns suspended jobs into background running jobs.
