There are many different ways to categorize educational principles and practices, and the vocabulary of teaching and learning can be confusing! For our purposes in this course, let’s agree there are five categories, or types, of *Instructional Strategies*:

- Direct Instruction
- Indirect Instruction
- Experiential Learning
- Independent Study
- Interactive Instruction

Within each category, there are many *Teaching Models**, *which function as guidelines for lesson planning. For example, the teaching models (5E and Do, Reflect, Apply) we have explored were both developed as Experiential Learning lesson planning tools. However, the other types of Instructional Strategies may also be relevant for you as a Science Educator!

In addition to Teaching Models, there are also *Teaching Methods*. A Teaching Method is a specific learning activity. For example, a small group discussion could be considered a Teaching Method. Some Teaching Methods may often be associated with a given strategy, but educators mix and match, and use methods as appropriate or needed.

For this assignment, you will explore different instructional strategies and teaching methods.

- First, research and summarize each of the different Instructional Strategies categories listed above in two to three sentences. Be sure to cite the references that you used.
- Second, using the grade level, Big Idea/Supportive Idea and standard you used in the last assignment, research the different teaching methods (i.e. specific activities) that you as an educator might use for your standard.
- Third, choose two of these teaching methods that you might use in support of your standard and summarize them in three to four sentences. Be sure that each one represents a different instructional strategies and make sure your activity is grade appropriate as it will cost you points if it is not. In addition, tell me which teaching method goes with which instructional strategy.

There is a wealth of online websites and textbook resources to use for this assignment. Keep track of where you find your information as you will need to cite your sources. The rubric for this assignment is found below. Please follow the outline in your discussion post.
