Policy Briefing Note Assignment – Written Briefing Note & Presentation
For this assignment, you will work with a group of approximately 3-4 students. This assignment provides you with an opportunity to work - together to apply the material learned in the course, particularly policy research and analytical skills. You are encouraged to use this assignment as a professional development opportunity to develop your teamwork, leadership, advocacy, and oral and written communication skills.
Your team is responsible for the completion of a Policy Briefing note, and for presenting your briefing to the class.
A briefing note is a powerful tool of access to leaders and colleagues – it is used to influence their decisions, actions and understanding of community development issues. In this regard, you bear a challenging responsibility: to deliver expert insight and strategic knowledge with brevity, clarity and professionalism – all with an organization, format, style and tone that your audience will accept.
Written Policy Briefing Note Assignment (20% of Final Grade)
For this assignment, your group is the Community Development Team for a large multi- service neighborhood Centre whose goal is to support less advantaged individuals and families in the Scarborough community to improve their lives and the community. Your Board of Directors is beginning their Strategic Planning process, and through this process, will be solidifying the agency's key programming priorities for the next 5-8 years.
Your group will be assigned one of the issues below to research, and write a briefing note answering two critical questions:
1. Why should this issue should be a strategic priority for the organization; and,
2. What is the recommended action steps (and why) to be implemented to address this issue.
You will be evaluated based on the following components of the assignment:
ï‚· Provides history and summary of research required to bring the audience up to speed on the issue;
ï‚· Should not be controversial or subject to dispute; and
ï‚· Sets the stage for considerations 2. Considerations
ï‚· Provide the facts, arguments, opinions, options analysis and discussion of implementation matters, as required, to show that the Conclusion or Recommendation is a sound response to the Issue.
This section may address the following, as needed:
ï‚· Political factors
ï‚· Economic factors
ï‚· Social factors
ï‚· Technological factors
ï‚· Legal factors
ï‚· Environmental factors
ï‚· Answers the question, “So what?”
ï‚· Tells the audience what happens next 4. Recommendations
ï‚· Tells the audience exactly what you are proposing 5. References
ï‚· Use Times New Roman 12-point font for all body text
ï‚· Keep the briefing note to not longer than 5 pages – NOT including references
– write concisely and effectively
ï‚· Use a clear and crisp style with a neutral tone
The background research for this assignment should rely on existing research published in peer-reviewed books, journals, policy reports, official websites of organizations and lobby groups and other reputable media sources.

- Comprehensive and appropriate use of evidence to support recommendations (50%)
- Creativity, writing and professionalism of presentation style (25%)
