This is the "The Love Talk" which was held on Friday, February 8th, 2013 with Nick Arandes and Patty Oneal. Nick is a world-renowned motivational speaker, and you know who Patty Oneal is. :) The talk discusses how love is socially constructed and also on how our ideas of love can lead to violence. Please make sure you watch the video with another person, or send someone the link. The other person you watch with can be a friend, lover, parent, or someone you dislike :). You can also choose to discuss the talk with someone else from this class. It cannot be an on-line discussion, but it can be over the phone.

Your discussion should be at least 30 minutes long and you need to include the date and time of your discussion in your paper. The purpose of your discussion is to determine how you both view love and give examples of how our social views of love can lead to violence.

First of all, what was the point of boot camp therapy? Notice how the issues the Barbies brought up were viewed by Dr. Joe. How did his views impact them? Did Dr. Joe represent common social views, or was he just an ass? :)

Next, discuss anything new you learned about love and how the ideas in the love talk contrast with the way love is viewed in our society. How does society's view of love potentially lead to violence? Give examples of some of the concepts in the love talk and how they can help prevent violence.  Please be honest. I know that many of you will be having discussions with friends or lovers that aren't Sociology students and you may disagree with each other.  If you or your partner don't think that any of the concepts in the Love Talk would be useful in preventing violence, then please share that as well. You will most likely disagree or agree based on your life experience and/or your educational focus.

Please discuss if violence has been a part of your life or close friends or family members and if it could have potentially been prevented with the tools that you learned in The Love Talk. If you don't think that the ideas could lead to less violence, you can discuss what you do think would be more effective and why. You will then write your paper based on your discussion. Please let me know with whom you watched the video (you don't need to give their name but you can if they are comfortable being named. Otherwise, you can say "my friend", etc.) Please include any relevant quotes or discussion points as well as your conclusions.

Your paper should be 2-4 pages long, double-spaced, 12 point font.
