Project #41001 - Business Partnering and Strategic Initiatives

Business Partnering and Strategic Initiatives

Imagine that you are an HR professional and you have been hired as the new senior vice president of Human Resources for a company with 17,300 employees and annual revenues of $2.6 billion. At first, you are very happy about this opportunity to further your administrative experiences, but soon you discover that the company’s HR department is in complete disarray. Although you have very little knowledge about the inner workings of the company and its HR department, it is now your sole responsibility to develop and implement solutions for the HR department’s many problems using its existing assets.

This is the exact scenario encountered by Cindy Hartley when she was hired by Sonoco in 1995 (Thomas, Reavis, & Groysberg, 2010). When Hartley first joined Sonoco, the HR department’s problems spanned across a variety of key areas. Compensation and performance management systems did not accurately reflect the measure of the contributions of individual employees to the company’s performance. There was no training and development process to enhance employees’ talents or develop new skills. There was also no succession process to identify future managers and leaders for promotions and upward mobility.

In this Assignment, please analyze how forming strategic partnerships could help Hartley alleviate Sonoco’s HR issues. To become familiar with Hartley’s challenges, review the case study, “Sonoco Products Company (A)” found in this week’s Learning Resources.

For this week’s Assignment, address the following in a 3- to 5-page APA style paper:

·         Answer these four questions that are posed at the end of the case study. Back up your response with specific details from the case study in a APA format style paper.

o    Which option would best suit a changing industry in which “only the flexible survive”?

o    Which options would better ensure that the right people were in the right positions?

o    Which option would better help the company meet its financial target of providing annual double-digit returns for its shareholders?

o    Which option best embodied Sonoco’s time-honored principle that “people build businesses”?

·         Which model would you recommend if you were Hartley? Why? How does the model you selected further the strategic initiatives of an organization?

·         Evaluate the process of developing the two plans used in the case study. What went well? What would you have done differently? What do you consider to be the key steps in the process of developing a strong strategic business initiative?

·         Evaluate the potential of business partnering for aligning with the strategic initiatives of an organization. What steps would the HR professional need to take to ensure this happened? How would this be evidenced?

An additional reference would include the book: “Strategic Business Partner: A critical Role for Human Resource Professionals” by Dana Gaines Robinson and James C. Robinson. This book is available via google. Reference Chapters: 3, 4, 6 and 7.
