Type: Essay

Learning Objectives Assessed: 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 2.1, 2.2

Weight: 50%

Task Description: 3000-3500 words

Topic: What should be the ideal curriculum for your area of work or professional practice?

This assignment asks you to present a case for how learning experiences for your area of work or professional practice should best be planned, enacted and experienced by learners. Curriculum is something that has deliberate purposes (intentions), is implemented by teachers or trainers (is enacted) and experienced by learners. In order to understand what constitutes curriculum and how it might be best developed to address your learners' needs, it is useful to consider:

  • curriculum intents;
  • what happens when the curriculum is enacted; and
  • what learners experience and, hence, learn.

Using these three concepts, propose what should constitute the 'ideal' curriculum - 'what should be' - for an area of work or professional practice.

Your response will need to include:

1. a consideration of the kinds of curriculum intents you will use;

2. how learning experiences for students will be selected and enacted;

3. what the students are likely to experience through its enactment; and

4. why this is the most desirable approach for curriculum development for your area of professional practice.

Suggested approach to the assignment

Introduction

The introduction should briefly state:

1. the paper's topic;

2. the area of work or professional practice you have selected; and

3. how you are structuring the essay.

Body of paper

The body of your paper presents the argument through a series of sections or topics that build your case for an ideal curriculum in the particular area of work or professional practice you have selected. Each of the sections can be organised under appropriate sub-headings. The section on the Intended curriculum should explain what is meant by an Intended curriculum for the particular professional area, its intended purposes, and how ideally it would be developed and who should be involved. The section on the Enacted curriculum should explain what is meant by an enacted curriculum and how learning experiences for students will be selected and enacted, and likely internal and external influences. The section on the Experienced curriculum should explain what is meant by the experienced curriculum and what the students are likely to experience in order to achieve the intended outcomes, including discussion of what they bring to the experience. In the final section, you need to justify why the three elements of the curriculum you have discussed comprise an 'ideal' curriculum. (Note that you are not asked to justify an existing curriculum, but to explain why what you have proposed is the best possible curriculum for a particular subject or discipline area, e.g. in automotive mechanics or business studies). Throughout the body of the essay, you will need to demonstrate your understanding of the curriculum concepts you refer to, by citing references from the curriculum development literature and relating them to the ideal curriculum. Use each section to make a key point and illustrate and substantiate that point, using the provided readings and those from your own research.

Conclusion

Briefly draw together the key points you have made in the paper and summarise your argument and conclusion.

Note: You do not have to actually prepare a curriculum document. Instead, you need to demonstrate that you understand the three conceptions of curriculum by applying them to a particular professional area. This is an opportunity for you to show how well you understand the three main elements of the curriculum development process; their application to the discipline area is the vehicle you are using for this purpose.
