Group Project on Culture and Communication

.

The purpose of this project is to study and learn about another culture and the way they communicate because of that culture or the way culture is because of communication styles. It is that old adage, what came first, the chicken or the egg?

Students will be assigned to work in groups of 3 to 5 students and will complete the following work by working together through electronic meetings held on the group's assigned discussion board forum determined by the group. Click on the folders below so you can get an idea of  what the process is for putting the project together and the progression of assignments that leads up to the final paper.

.

*** Use the group discussion forums to communicate with groupmates.  Do not use email as there would be no record of this communication.

.

KEEP IN MIND:

.

1.  It is one culture PER GROUP

2.  You select different nonverbal categories PER PERSON for that one culture.  You may choose 1 or more nonverbal categories per person.

3.  PPT: Each student makes her/his own ppt slides and 1 person copies them into a single document/project. PAPER: Each student writes her/his own researched paragraphs  and 1 person copies them into a single document/project. (although they are created individually while in collaboration with the group - the final project needs to look like one single, fluid project - same fonts, backgrounds = continuity)
4. PPT: One project =  cohesive background and fonts so it looks like one project.  PAPER: Has set font requirements.

5.  Each person should add a transitional phrase slide (ppt)/ paragraph (paper) after her/his section to the next nonverbal category

6.  Each person needs in-text citations and then to contribute to a single group work's cited - in MLA 7th edition formatting (remember: MLA requires alphabetical order).
7.  Each person needs a minimum of 3 sources  (for an AVERAGE grade -- double or triple this requirement for Above Average or Excellent grades).

Your group may choose 1 of the following projects:

.
1.  Write a research paper
2.  Write a research powerpoint

.

1)      PAPER REQUIREMENTS - A research paper studying one single culture while each per person selects a minimum of one of the nine categories of nonverbal communication. In the past groups have chosen cultures such as Irish, Japanese, Kenyan, Mexican, German, Welsh, etc... Create a 500 word  per person paper with minimum of 3 different sources per person to support your information.

- The paper must be typed, arial font, 11 pt. size font, double spaced and documented MLA style.

- You must have a title page, introduction, conclusion, IN TEXT CITATIONS in documented MLA style,  and Works Cited page.

- Minimum of 3 different sources per person required.  You may read it to start your research but do not use it as a source>
.

To Summarize - minimum requirements per person for paper:
Words = 500
Sources = 3
Correct MLA documentation & citations
No wikipedia = credible sources
Correct formatting and typing

.

2) POWERPOINT REQUIREMENTS - A research powerpoint (PPT) studying one single culture per group with each person selecting one or more of the nine categories of nonverbal communication. In the past groups have chosen cultures such as Irish, Japanese, Kenyan, Mexican, German, Welsh, etc... Create a 300 word per person PPT with minimum 3 per person sources to support your information. The PPT must use consistent fonts and font size, include detailed photos/pictures that clarify your thesis and have in text citations in documented MLA style. Graphics and design are part of this grade since the word count is lower.

.

- You must have a title page, introduction, conclusion and Works Cited page.
- Minimum of 3 different sources per person required
.
You may read it to start your research but do not use it as a source>

Please do NOT use Prezi software - several students have used it  - they do not turn out to be even C grade level presentations.  Do NOT use Prezi!!!!

To Summarize - minimum requirements per person for ppt option:

Words = 300
Sources = 3
Correct MLA documentation & in text citations
No wikipedia = credible sources
Creative formatting and design + corresponding graphics

The GROUP PROJECT is worth 50 points of your entire total course points.

 Frequently Asked Questions:
1. May we do more than 5 nonverbal categories?
Yes, absolutely.  The each member needs to do a minimum of 1 nonverbal category (as long as you can meet your required WORD COUNT one category is fine, if you need more information  - select an additional nonverbal category) , but are welcome to do as many as the group wants.

2.  Is this a "compare/contrast" assignment?
No, this is a research assignment about a single culture or country.

3.  Do I have to pick up the slack and do extra sections for non-participating students?
Absolutely -NOT!!!  Just email Ms. P and explain:
a.  Who is not participating
b.  Which nonverbal category the student was assigned
c.  EXCEPTION - The group project MUST HAVE an introduction, conclusion and works cited.  If the non-participating person was assigned one of these items THEN the group must pull together and complete these sections.

4.  It is one single grade per group meaning all members receive the same grade UNLESS -- there was a non-participating member and it was correctly noted within the project (see instructions below).
.

*** It is in your best interest, since it is one grade per group, that if a fellow member is struggling with the assignment - use effective group communication skills to encourage or assist that member.
.

The culture of the US does not encourage good group skills while in elementary and high school, yet the American professional environment often requires efficient and effective group skills to complete a task or do the job.  This is illogical.  Therefore, one of the goals of this assignment is to encourage you all to utilize good, effective group communication skills to complete a task.

.

All this being said, if one student truly contributes far more or less than everyone else, this will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
