Project #41786 - Essay

Western Civilization

Problem/Solution Research Paper

Goal                            Every research paper you write is a synthesis of information that proves

your hypothesis.  Social Studies is a science and we approach the study of history through the lens of sociology.  All scientific writing begins with a problem that you research and come to  know while trying to come up with a solution.  This is the template for your research paper.

Prompt                       The Industrial Age which spans from 1800-1914, is filled with many

Inventions and discoveries that have made our lives better in the 21st century.  Some of the inventions and discoveries laid the ground work for the indispensible tools we use every day.  How could we exist without a car or an airplane?  How would a wound heal without antiseptic?  How would we survive without our time off from work?  All these inventions and discoveries came to us during the Industrial Age.  Choose one problem from this time period and examine the solution to that problem.  Then hypothesize how we still benefit from this discovery or invention.

Process                       The process for this paper will follow a scientific format.  You will

explain the problem in detail in the first part of your paper and then state your hypothesis/thesis/focus for your research.  You will then examine all the details of the solution/invention that fixed the “problem.”  You will end your paper by extending your study into the present day and show how this problem/solution is still relevant and important.

You will have a persuasive thesis for this paper and there are only 3 ways to prove a persuasive thesis: 1. Fact/Statistics, 2. Case Study/Relevant Analogy, 3. Authoritative Testimony.  Your support paragraphs need to be topical and they need to prove your thesis/hypothesis.
