Project #43126 - argument analysis

"Stop blaming video games for America's gun violence," by Kristin M.S. Bezio http://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/Opinion/2013/0212/Stop-blaming-video-games-for-America-s-gun-violence (Links to an external site.) Read through Bezio's opinion piece and identify how she builds her argument and how she addresses the rhetorical situation.

Once you've identified Bezio's use of argument, write a one-page post where you answer the following questions in paragraph form: What is the author’s main claim?  What is the context of the argument?  Is the argument part of an ongoing debate or controversy? Who are the intended readers?  How does the argument seek to influence them? How does the author integrate ethical, emotional, and logical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos)? What evidence does the author use?  Is it effective? What is the author’s enabling assumptions?  What is the backing for those assumptions? Does the author address differing views?  Why or why not? Does the author qualify her argument? How does the author negotiate differences between her view and the views of others? What is your overall evaluation of the argument’s effectiveness? Are you convinced? Did the piece change your mind on the topic, or did it reinforce what you already believed? Explain.

As you are answering these questions, be sure to give us specific examples from the article that illustration how you know. As you do this, consider how (if at all) your answers differ and why. How does your personal background and beliefs in this topic influence how you analyzed the article? (You're doing in this discussion what we did in class with the "Feminism" article -- you're finding and discussing the various aspects of rhetoric and argument -- more practice!)

Post your first response by noon on Saturday, and have your two responses to your peers done before you come to class (5:30 p.m.) on Tuesday. Post your analysis, and you will then need to read the posts submitted by others in the class and discuss your answers (reply to at least two peers). Your responses must be hearty 5-7 sentence paragraphs to "count" and do you best to use PIE paragraph form. Make me proud! (Oh, and be nice to each other, too, please -- I intentionally chose a topic that might light some of you up, which is great, but be respectful about it!)
