Scenario A

You are the Southwest Regional Director for Lean In, the foundation that promotes the goals of the book “Lean In.” Despite the fact that there are more than 14,000 official Lean In circles, it has come to your attention that Hispanics and other minorities have not been participating at rates proportional to their numbers in the general population of your region. You want to change that. Your assignment is to create media message planner customized for Austin, Texas, the location of your campaign launch.

 

Scenario B

You are the Southwest Regional Director for Lean In, the foundation that promotes the goals of the book “Lean In.” Despite the huge sales of the book and success of Lean In.org, you want to expose more men to the message and the cause. Your assignment is to visit various cities in the Southwest to recruit more men to join Lean In circles and otherwise support the Lean In message. Your assignment is to create a media message planner customized for Austin, Texas, the location of your campaign launch.

 

Scenario C

You are the Southwest Regional Director for Lean In, the foundation that promotes the goals of the book “Lean In.” Despite the huge sales of the book and success of Lean In.org, you are disappointed in sales in Texas. You also feel that this is a good time to get the “Lean In” message out to Texas women. Your assignment is to create a media message planner customized for Austin, Texas, the location of your campaign launch.

 

Part 1: Strategy and Channels for Message Planner. Limit: Roughly 300 words

a)    Identify your scenario.

b)   You are the Southwest Regional Director for Lean In, the foundation that promotes the goals of the book “Lean In.” Despite the huge sales of the book and success of Lean In.org, you want to expose more men to the message and the cause. Your assignment is to visit various cities in the Southwest to recruit more men to join Lean In circles and otherwise support the Lean In message. Your assignment is to create a media message planner customized for Austin, Texas, the location of your campaign launch.

 

c)    Explain your strategy for getting your message in front of your target audience and making it appeal to them.

 

 

d)   Identify what media and non-media channels you will use to get your message in front of your audience and explain why you chose them. (Examples: social media, interviews with community and commercial radio, broadcast news, print weeklies, church bulletins, outreach to college classrooms). Limit your choices to 3.

 

 

e)    Identify at least one program, outlet or location for each of your channels and explain how you would get your message out through them. (an interview on the public affairs program of KVRX radio with host Tim Lewis, a story pitch to The Austin Chonicle’s Lisa Moser, a story pitch to Hispanic weekly El Mundo, a special Lean In information session at the Clarksdale community center, a classroom visit to the class Latino Media and Film at The University of Texas, a meeting with the Lean In chapters at St. Edward’s University and UT, an introduction at a team meeting of UT football team, a hash tag on Twitter).

 

Part 2: Message Planner. Limit: Roughly 350 words.

 

a)    Create an umbrella message for your campaign. Limit: 20 words.

 

b)    List of 3 key arguments from “Lean In” most relevant to your objective. These would serve as supporting points to your umbrella message. Limit: 20 words per argument. (Cite page numbers from the book for each).

 

 

 

c)    List 1 quote or story from the book to support each argument. Limit: 20 words each. (Cite page numbers and paraphrase where needed).

 

d)   Find a story from your own life that you can leverage to establish authenticity or add emotional or personal depth. Limit: 100 words.

 

e)    Identify 1-2 potential questions an interviewer or listener might have and provide a brief response to each. Limit: 100 words total.

 

f)     Write a call to action. Limit: 20 words.
