Probability

Task Background: Now that you have a general understanding of how to collect and describe data, you will now look at how to analyze the data to determine the probability or chance of an event occurring. For example, when the computer technician states, "there is a 50% chance that the data on your hard-drive will be restored," the technician is stating the probability or likelihood that the event will occur—in this case, restoration. In this Discussion Board, you will explore concepts to help define probability.

Primary Task RequirementsWithin the Discussion Board area, write 300–400 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas:

  1. In your own words, define probability.
  2. There are 2 types of probability: empirical and theoretical (classical).
    • Define the 2 probability types in your own words.
    • List 1 profession example for each probability type: empirical probability and  theoretical (classical) probability. Explain clearly how these probabilities are used.
  3. List a real-world probability problem for your peers to solve. Your peers will have the opportunity to work your problem and receive feedback from you as the discussion progresses. Be sure to go back and respond to those who solved your problem or who need help with solving it.

Responses to Other Students: Respond to at least 2 of your fellow classmates with at least a 1-paragraph reply about their Primary Task Response regarding items you found to be compelling and enlightening and by solving their probability problem.

Discrete and Continuous Probability Distributions

Task Background: Thus far, you have learned how to collect and describe data as well as finding probabilities of events. This week, you will learn how to take the probabilities and apply them with the use of probability distributions.

Probability distributions are used in many aspects to answer questions about given events. For example, a clothing store owner opens a new boutique and is working on a 3-day forecast of sales during the grand opening of the boutique. The owner determines that there is a 40% probability that customers will visit the store and make a purchase, which means 60% will visit the store and not make a purchase. How do you determine the probability that customers will visit and make a purchase on 0, 1, 2, or 3 of the days? To solve problems such as this, a probability distribution can help you identify the possible outcomes to make a conclusion. In this Discussion Board, you will explore the concepts to help construct discrete and continuous probability distributions.
