Project #44090 - Essay

Thus far in this class, we have explored the works of nine authors:

José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi,

Esteban Echeverría,

Luis Martín Guzmán,

Juan Rulfo,

Horacio Quiroga,

Jorge Luis Borges,

Alejo Carpentier,

Gabriel García Márquez/Carlos Fuentes, and

Julio Ramón Ribeyro.

Whereas the text we read by Fernández de Lizardi was a chapter of his book, The Mangy Parrot, the other readings were short stories of authors who have written, nonetheless, also novels and other genres.

The general purpose of the exam is to ask you to perform mainly two types of exercise: read and write, which are, after all, what we are doing in the class.

The exam consists of two parts, and it will have to be typed on Word Document, double-space, and sent to me as attachment via e-mail. (Both parts of the exam need to be saved on A SINGLE document file.)

1.    Based on class discussions, reading materials, and lectures, define FIVE of the following terms (minimum of 150 words, double-spaced). If you paraphrase or quote, add corresponding citation. Copying and pasting someone else’s text is absolutely prohibited. Please be specific and include examples as well as analysis of the texts we have read in class. It is NOT sufficient to mention the text as an example. You must include a specific part of the text and explain why and how it serves as an example for the definition. You should NOT employ external resources. Your answer should be based on the reading material, weekly lectures, and commentaries only. Please avoid using sites such Wikipedia.com, etc. Definitions without carefully explained and analyzed examples will be considered partial answers and will be graded accordingly. By “carefully explained and analyzed examples” I mean that you are selecting parts of the text to show how and why a term or concept or figure is described or defined as it is in your answer.

Modernismo; Naturalism; Allegory; Symbolism; Metaphor and Analogy; Civilization and Barbarism; Nature versus State of culture; Modernization and Modernity; Mexican Revolution; Pancho Villa; Facundo Quiroga; the short story’s form; the idea of economic and cultural debt in relation to Latin American culture; the purpose of the dedication; magical realism, the marvelous real; urban realism; the structure of time and space; the representation of violence; representation of poverty.

2.    The second part of the exam consists of a comparative essay. You will have to choose only two texts from the ones we have read in class to compare them as you answer one of the two following questions:

A.   The representation of time (the everyday versus the notion of eternity) and space (domestic, public, nature, rural, urban, etc.). How are time and space represented? Then, what aspects or elements of the narrative do these representations advance?

B.    The representation of objects (non-humans) as opposed to the subjects (humans). How are the persons represented in contradistinction to the things in the stories?

The first paragraph of the essay must state explicitly the thesis of your argument. Be very specific. The narrower your argument or points of comparison are, the more focused, organized, and effective your discussion will be. The length of the essay is 3 pages, double-space (a minimum of 750 words). Your analysis is comparative.  Once again, you cannot resort to outside sources such as Wikipedia.com; Ask.com; etc. You must rely on the texts, weekly commentaries, and lectures alone. Well-selected textual examples and their careful analysis should represent an important bulk of your essay. Add proper citation (page numbers and author’s name) for the quotes you include in your essay.
