Alternatives to Long-Term Care Facilities

Case Study: The MetLife Caregiving Cost Study: Productivity Losses to U.S. Businesses

Long-term care facilities provide care for the elderly in the United States, but many of the nation’s elderly reside in their own home or in the home of a caregiver.  Working adults, men and women, provide care to elderly relatives, but the workplace frequently must make accommodations to support the caregiving responsibilities.

A report published by the MetLife Mature Market Institute in 2006 presents information concerning the cost of caregiving in the United States in terms of the loss of worker productivity.

Read the MetLife Caregiving Cost Study: Productivity Losses to U.S. Businesses report and answer the questions below.

  1. Beginning on page 12, the report includes information concerning the total number of caregivers employed full-time with caregiving responsibilities. Discuss the number of caregivers and the economic impact on business by the employees who choose to leave the workplace to assume full-time caregiving duties.
  2. If the number of caregivers did not choose to leave the workplace and society was responsible to provide the care, how would the care be provided?
    1. Assume that there is one elder for each employee who left the workplace.
    2. Complete an analysis of the hypothetical impact on the number of elder-related services, both institutional (e.g., full-time care in a nursing home) and community-based (e.g., in-home care), if family-based caregivers no longer rendered care to the elder population in the United States.
    3. Establish a ratio of the number of elders who would need nursing home care and the number who would need in-home care.
    4. Develop assumptions and provide the dollar value of care for those needing nursing home care and those needing in-home care.
  3. What policy recommendation would you make to cover the cost-of-care for these individuals, and how would you suggest the initiatives be financed?
