Personal Reflection: Strategic Competencies and Attributes

In the past two weeks,  you explored how metrics are used to evaluate the capabilities and outcomes of strategic initiatives. Metrics can also be used in self-assessment. Throughout this course, you have studied many competencies, attributes, and procedures that are necessary to the role of a Strategic Business Partner (SBP). This Assignment gives you the opportunity to measure your learning in this course and identify potential areas for self-improvement.

In this Assignment, you complete a self-assessment to determine your readiness to transition to the SBP role. You will then develop a personal plan to improve your proficiency in specific competencies and attributes necessary for successful Strategic Business Partners. To complete this Assignment, address the following:

Complete the self-assessment instrument found in Chapter 10 of your text. This assessment is located beginning on Chapter 10, page 231 under the heading “Something You Can Do.” There are three different sections to complete:

·         Section One: Competencies and Attributes:Identifies competencies required of Strategic Business Partners. Assess your current skill level with each of these competencies.

·         Section Two: Strategic Business Partner Accountabilities:Identifies what Strategic Business Partners must do on the job to fulfill their accountabilities. Assess your current level of skill to perform each of these requirements.

·         Section Three: HR Organization Factors:Identifies organizational factors that, when in place, support Strategic Business Partners and the work they do. When these factors are absent, they are barriers to success. Assess your current HR function and its readiness to support the work of Strategic Business Partners.

 

·         The company will be American Red Cross. I completed the pre-work and checked off the level of competence for each section. The information is attached in PDF format.

After completing the self-assessment instrument, complete the Summary of Assessment Answers Form (attached). Return this worksheet along with the responses to the questions outlined below.  

 

After you have finished with the worksheet, use your responses to address the following (Must be written in APA style):

·         Briefly summarize the findings from the assessment, noting anything surprising. Next, based on these results, for each of the three different categories—competencies and attributes, accountabilities, and organizational factors— develop a brief but specific plan for personal improvement in all areas needing improvement. Include the specific steps you could take to increase your skills in HR strategic competencies with a targeted time for completion. How can you ensure that you are continually strengthening weaknesses and building on strengths according to your plan?

·         Provide, as an appendix to this paper, any tools identified and accumulated throughout this course that would be beneficial for you to have in your HR toolbox for future use. Note: The toolkit must include the name of each tool, a brief summary of how they work, and what they are best used for.
