Project #45279 - peer review

Two substantial responses to peers (at least 5-7 sentences)

1st :

Even realizing that the music video of a song “And We Danced” by Macklemore was made mainly for fun, I still find it third-rate. To be honest, it even was uncomfortable for me to watch it in the library, because other people could see this on my screen.

I know that one man's meat is another man's poison, and I write this review for those who found this video poisonous, for those who have at least a grain of taste to hate it.

At first, I would like to describe the “music” part of this music video. Macklemore is supposed to be a rapper, but, just like the most of modern colleagues, he was singing more than he was rapping, and it sounded absurd, like fireman setting people on fire.

But more perturbing than the uncertain genre of his music was the performance. Both rapping and singing are the abilities on which Macklemore has to work; his voice sounds just not enough to sing.

The lyrics of this song carry absolutely no meaning; moreover, the quantity of meaning crosses zero and reaches negative numbers: “If you don't have a pussy/Pop a cock into a booty/To a booty”. I could cite any other part of the song, and it would be as grotesque as this one.

Let’s move on to the “video” part, because that’s where the real madness begins. We can see people drinking, pretending to have sex and, of course dancing. Indeed, it is the six minutes of pure whoredom.

2nd :

I don't entirely understand the video, being somewhat unfamiliar with the hip-hop genre and likely too young to understand a few of the references. You should probably take everything I say about Macklemore's And We Dancedwith a grain of salt, and I hope I don't offend anyone who knows what they're talking about by saying somethingreally wrong. That said, I found it to be an entertaining and well-done music video.

The target audience is liberal-minded Americans in their twenties to fifties. Any older than that and a person is not likely to be interested in pop music so far removed from his or her own youth, and very young people like myself or non-Americans will not understand many of the references--even someone from a different English-speaking country would have difficulty with the colloquial expressions specific to America. These include colloquial expressions like "legs up" that (I assume) you need decades of experience speaking American English to hear of, vulgar phrases like "cock-blocking" that one would not acquire without having a lot of casual conversation, and more obscure phrases like "skeet" that fall into both of those categories.

And We Danced is tongue-in-cheek throughout, possibly meant as a parody of other songs in the genre. There are too many silly or cringe-inducing moments to leave any doubt that the video was meant to be taken seriously: referring to Britain as "a little place that some people call... Great. Britain." at 0:08, Macklemore describing his pink, long penis at 0:41 and 2:23, his explanation of what to do "if you don't have a puss-ay" at 2:35, and an incomprehensible "Let's burn down the Vatican" at 3:35, among others. This is relevant because normally I would judge a music video in large part on not being cringe-worthy, but this only applies to music videos that are meant to be taken seriously. And We Danced is not at all meant to be taken seriously, so it gets a free pass on this one.

I am far from knowing what I am talking about when it comes to filming either, but the video seems to be effectively filmed. I don't know enough to say what it is about them, but the camera angles from 0:48 to 1:03 do a good job of showing the party as having pathetically collapsed, focusing on the unconscious or bored faces of party-goers. The rest of the video is much more lively, after Macklemore saves the party.
