Project #4550 - Aristotle

Write a 7-10 page, double-spaced, paginated paper on one of the topics supplied below. Your paper must be based on a close, exegetical reading and interpretation of the texts covered in class and assigned in the syllabus. (Complete Works of Aristotle, Vol. 1&2)

1. In Metaphysics Zeta (VII), Aristotle maintains that (1) a thing's substance is its form; (2) forms are universal; and (3) no universal is a substance. These appear to be inconsistent. Are they really? In answering this question, discuss the roles of essence, universal, definition, form, matter, unity, and substance.

2. Explain and evaluate the arguments given by Aristotle in Metaphysics XII and Physics VII for the existence of an "unmoved mover" that is the cause of all motion. Aristotle's medieval Christian and Islamic theologian interpreters took the unmoved mover to be identical with God. Is the unmoved mover God? Why or why not?
