Project #46408 - advertisement reflection

Introduction
Drug advertising, like other mass media presentations, have a significant impact on people and their use of drugs. This includes the ways physicians prescribe, patients comply with medications or self-medicate with various products, and consumers use drugs for social or recreational purposes. Drug ads contain a variety of statements or messages (in text or symbolic form). Some of these messages attempt to inform or educate the viewer, while other messages attempt to influence the observer’s thinking or behavior with misleading or inappropriate notions.

Learning Activities

Watch the three (3) DTC ads from television for Chantix®, Lyrica®, AND Cymbalta® from the URLs given below:

Write a brief review and critique of these drug advertisements (between 400 - 750 words in length using 12-point, Times New Roman font, 1.5 line spacing) using the questions below, in order.

  • How do the ads portray “health” and “illness”? Explain and exemplify.
  • Does the imagery in the ad match the typical patient who has these conditions?
  • Who are they targeting?
  • Is the drug and / or disease information presented accurate?
  • Anticipate two possible misunderstandings or behaviors that each ad could elicit in patients. How would you address each of them??
