Project #46646 - Argumentative Research

Argumentative Research Project (350 points total) Over the next several weeks, you will develop, research, write, and submit an argumentative research project in several steps. An argumentative research paper takes a position on a debatable topic and presents evidence derived from sources to support its position. The purpose of this assignment is to give you the tools you need to successfully complete a typical research project for a college course. This project has multiple phases/assignments: Evaluative Annotated Bibliography (100 points): This is a written presentation of your research on the subject. Instructions are posted on eLearn. It will include a minimum of 10 sources (only 2 sources can come from the internet. The rest must be located through the library). DUE 10/28 Rough Draft of paper: (50 points). This is the completed rough draft of your paper. You will submit it and I will review it, give comments, and return it to you to revise for your final paper. This is an all/nothing grade. If you turn in a complete draft including a Works Cited page, you get full credit. If you don’t turn one it, you get a zero. I will not accept these late for any reason. Due 11/11 Final Draft: (200 points). This is the revised, polished, ready-to-be-graded copy of your paper. It should be 1000-1200 words (4-5 pages) and follow MLA formatting and citation guidelines. DUE 11/20 While you will make most of the decisions about the work, you will follow the process listed below. Develop a topic: Begin with a broad topic that you are interested in researching. Do some preliminary research to narrow and focus your topic. This takes some finesse. The topic cannot be too broad or too narrow. You may write on anything except for abortion, the death penalty, legalizing marijuana, and the existence/non-existence of god. Topics MUST be approved by me. Develop a research question to guide your research. Research your topic using library resources (books, journals, databases, etc.). Only 2 of the sources for the annotated bibliography may come from the general internet. We will be working on this during class. Annotated Bibliographies are due on 10/28. Refine your thesis statement and organize your ideas based on the fruits of your research and begin writing your first draft. See the handout “Argumentative Paper Format” posted on eLearn. Submit your Rough Draft for Review Due 11/11 Read comments on returned rough draft and revise your paper for final submission on 11/20.
