Project #4694 - Visual Basic Discussion Assignment and Programming Assignment

Programming Assignment 2

Do the following programming projects from An Introduction to Programming Using Visual Basic 2010:

  1. Programming project no. 2, p. 100

  2. Programming project no. 5, p. 101

To submit your assignment, first create a ZIP file of the application folder for each project (see Note on Submitting Programming Assignments). Then upload and submit both ZIP files to the assignment link provided in the Submit Assignments area of the course Web site. Consult the course Calendar for the assignment's due date.

2. Suppose automobile repair customers are billed at the rate of $35 per hour for labor. Also, sup-
pose costs for parts and supplies are subject to a 5% sales tax. Write a program to display a sim-
plified bill. The customer’s name, the number of hours of labor, and the cost of parts and
supplies should be entered into the program via text boxes. When a button is clicked, the cus-
tomer’s name and the three costs should be displayed in a list box, as shown in Fig. 3.19.

5. Write a program to print a business travel expenses attachment for an income tax
return. The program should request as input the name of the organization visited, the
dates and location of the visit, and the expenses for meals and entertainment, airplane
fare, lodging, and taxi fares. (Only 50% of the expenses for meals and entertainment
are deductible.) A possible form layout and run are shown in Figs. 3.22 and 3.23,
respectively.

Discussion Forum 4

In Discussion Forum 4 on the class Discussion Board, post a response to one (1) of the following discussion questions:

  1. Business, scientific, and entertainment systems are inherently complex. It is a well-known fact that systems can be better understood by breaking them down into individual tasks. Share how a programmer would use "top-down design" to understand better how a computer program should be designed. How do hierarchy charts aid the programmer?

  2. Computers process data. Some data are numbers; some are strings. Distinguish between numbers and strings. How does a programmer tell the computer whether a variable is a number or a string?
