Question 1: Size of nuclear and atomic structure (10 marks)

If the proton had the size of the earth, what would the corresponding scaled distance of the electron from that earth-sized proton? How does this compare to the distance of the earth from the moon?

Question 2: Nuclear stability (20 marks)

For the first four elements (including hydrogen) draw up a table showing the possible combinations of electrons, protons and neutrons, giving the atomic number and mass number and the notation shown above with A, Z and X. For each element stop when N>Z+3. Do all these combinations exist? If they don't all exist can you suggest a reason why they might not?

Question 3: Unstable nuclides (30 marks)

For the following decay modes write what would the new hypothetical elements and its corresponding Atomic, Mass and Neutron numbers for 60Co: (for each question, report the complete nuclear reaction).

a) Electron emission
b) Proton emission
c) Neutron emission
d) Emission of Helium nucleus e) Positron emission

Question 4: Zeeman effect (40 marks)

Calculate the energy difference (in eV) of the two energy states due the existence of the proton spin in the Hydrogen nucleus and a magnetic field with strength equal to 3 Tesla.
