HW # 4:

I.  Read chp. 3 in Dougherty.

II. Work problems on p. 158 , 3.1 and 3.6

    Work problems on p. 164-64, 3.8, 3.10, and 3.13

III.  Work the following problems on GRETL or the computer package of your choice:

     1.  Use data set in Gretl named "engel" and

          a.  Regress foodexp on income.

          b.  Test for the significance of the (i) intercept and (ii) slope at the 1% level using the t-statistic and the p-value.

          c.  Test for the significance of the goodness of fit of the regression.

     2.  Use the Wooldridge data set "bwght" (birth weight and cigarette smoking)

          a.  Regress bwghtlbs on cigs

          b.  Are the signs of the coefficients what you expected?  Which coefficients are significant at the 1% level?

          c.  Test for the significance of the whole regression equation.

    3.  Use the data set in Gretl named "attend" and

         a.  Regress term gpa on all the other explanatory variables.

         b.  Are the signs of the coefficients what you expected?

         c.  Which coefficients are significant at the 5% level?  Report p-values also.

         d.  Report R square and interpret what it means.

         e.  Test for the significance of the whole regression equation.

     Submit the printed Gretl output for all of your regressions.
