  1) Typically we treat objects near the surface of our planet with the gravitational potential

Ug = mgh. All matter exerts gravitational forces, through the following potential:

a) Use any means you choose to (neatly) graph The gravitational potential of the

Earth and Moon as a function of distance between them. How far apart will they

be when there is 0J of potential energy?

b) The moon follows a slightly elliptical orbit. Assume that the only force on the

moon is gravitational attraction. Is there any torque exerted on the moon?

Explain your answer.

c) Use conservation of angular momentum to show how the perigee and apogee

velocities are related. (The moon’s velocity at perigee is about 964 m/s.)
