Project #48921 - humanities discussion

Background to the discussion: Francisco Goya has often been referred to as the "father" of Romanticism in painting. A Spaniard who lived during the Napoleonic Wars, Goya produced one of his most famous works, The Third of May, 1808, in response to the French invasion and occupation of his country. Study the image of this painting on p. 192 of the textbook, Figure 17.1. The caption below the image characterizes it as "One of the most powerful antiwar statements ever made." For a close-up view of The Third of May, 1808, click here.

Chapter 17 also discusses the development of photography, first invented in 1839, some 25 years after Goya painted The Third of May, 1808. The new medium of photography now presented the realities of war in a way never before seen by the general public. American photographer Mathew B. Brady was among the first to bring images from the Civil War battlefront to a wide audience. Read about Brady on this web site and study On the Antietam Battlefield, taken a few days after the bloodiest battle of the war in 1862. Click on the image to enlarge it.
