As we have seen throughout this course, studying a range of Black cultural expressions –  and thevarious historical contexts from which they have emerged – provide significant insight into howdiffering Black communities in history have understood themselves and the worlds they made.Focussing on film and employing historical research, you are going to explore the “post-Civil Rightsera” and what it meant for Black Americans in the 1970s and 80s to negotiate the material realities oflate-capitalism, neoliberalism, globalization, the dismantling of the welfare state, mass incarceration,changing ideas about race (i.e.,”colorblindness,” and “post-racialism”), etc. all while making their wayin the decades after the supposed “Negro Problems” had been “solved.”
This project requires that you think critically about one (or more) of the below films (each produced byBlack filmmakers during the 1970s and 80s), and do independent research utilizing scholarly resources.
We are calling this assignment a “film review,” but really, what you will be producing is a researchpaper on post-Civil Rights Black America, utilizing one of the below films as your principal source.
Assignment Specifics:• Choose a film.
• In 5-8 double spaced pages, construct an argumentative essay that allows you to thoroughly
explore the relationship between your film and 1970s and/or 80s Black America.
• Use at least 5 scholarly sources (books published by academic publishers; academic journals;primary sources if appropriate; etc.) and avoid Web sources. Wikipedia and the like may be fineplaces to start, and may help generate ideas, these are not appropriate academic sources.
• Cite all of your sources (any academic style is fine, just be consistent.); Paper format: Doublespaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman; Cover sheet: your full name, ID #, course title,section #
