1.     Discuss math as an underlying theme in the novel. What elements are geometric? What role does algebra play (i.e., what formulas/equations are presented)? How is problem-solution methodology applied?

  1. The concept of happiness in the novel. How do different characters understand happiness? Discuss in detail how each character attempts to obtain and/or explain happiness. How is happiness in the novel related to desire, freedom, etc.?

  3. Compare and contrast O-90 and I-330. Discuss the symbolic meaning of geometrical figures, colors, and other details in portraying O-90 and I-330.
  4. What is the significance of the title of the novel? Discuss the primary differences between we and they in the story? Which is stronger within the novel?  Discuss the tension between I and we.

Purpose and audience

Your purpose is to analyze one of the aspects of the novel in relation to the novel’s theme.

Notes

You must have a specific, detailed thesis sentence that clearly states your position on the issue.  Follow the instructions of Chapter W-2 of Seagull for formulating the effective thesis statement and organizing your essay.

You must organize the paper logically. Each of your supporting paragraphs must have a clear topic sentence. Follow the instructions for organizing paragraphs in Chapter W-3 of Seagull.

In this paper you will need to provide quotations and examples from the novel to support your points. Remember to cite both quotations and summaries of the episodes.

Format.

Your paper should be four pages long. Follow MLA format.

Note the following points about the MLA format:

  • Titles of novels and plays should be underlined. (Ex. War and Peace, Othello)
  • In the title of your essay capitalize all words except prepositions and articles but do not put quotations marks around your own title or italicize it or underline it.
  • Attach the list of works cited. Your only source will be the novel itself.

Use the MLA essay format—one-inch margins all around, double-spaced, name and page number in the top right hand corner on every page. (Ex. Smith 4). You must hand in all your preparation materials (prewriting, outlines and drafts) along with the final version of the paper on.
