Project #49938 - History Book Review

This course is about Modern America (1877 to present). If you have a book in mind go ahead and use it.

For this report, you are to read a book about a topic related to the scope of this course. Please select one of the Additional Readings choices that are listed at the end of each chapter of Who Built America. Your selection must be from one of those sections. For example, if you wish to cover a topic within the World War I era, go to pages 331-333 of the Who Built America text, and choose one of those books. The due date for this report is Wednesday, Dec. 3 Late.

Please submit your review as a Microsoft Word document (doc, docx, or rtf format), Apple Pages, or as an Adobe PDF file. Please do not submit your review using Microsoft Works or WordPerfect because I do not have those software programs on my computer. The report is to be 5-6 pages in length. The report is to be double-spaced. Any reports that are copied from Internet sources will be assigned a failing grade. Please use a title page (length of review does not include title page). This report will count as 15% toward your final grade. As you write your report, start by writing the name and author of the book at the top margin (1 inch down from the paper’s top edge) of your first page of text in this format:

Vargas, Zaragosa. (1993) Proletarians of the North: A History of Mexican

Industrial Workers in Detroit and the Midwest, 1917-1933. Berkeley: University of California Press.

In terms of the content of the report, I am looking for two main points of discussion. First, you should devote the first half of the report to a summary of the main points that the author is trying to convey to the reader. To help you to address this issue, consider some of these questions: What is the author’s purpose for writing this book? What type of background is he/she writing from?

" As for the second point of discussion, this is where you provide your opinion or perceptions of the book. In other words, what did you think about it? How did the book relate to the class? Is this a good book for use in a community college class? You are definitely encouraged to write in first person singular (I feel that..., I think..) as you provide your opinions. To back up your analysis of your topic, you are encouraged to cite material from either of the textbooks. In order to insure an effective essay that successfully conveys your arguments, you are strongly encouraged to devote at least two pages of text to your commentary.

As you compose your essay, please pay close attention to the mechanics aspect, in addition to content. Please avoid common errors such as inconsistent paragraph length (don’t make your paragraphs very short or excessively lengthy), lack of indentation, run-on sentences, misspelled words, and please avoid terms

such as LOL, OMG, IMO, etc. Please take the approach that you are writing an essay for a prestigious university such as University of Michigan or Columbia.
