Project #50005 - Heat transfer

2 questions which I require full worked solutions for:

 

1. Alloy steel components with a total mass of 120kg are hardened by quenching in a vat of oil. The components are at a temperature of 820*c and the oil is initially at 80*c .

        A. Calculate the minimum quantity of oil (in kg) required to ensure that the oil temperature does not exceed 145*c during the quenching operation

        B. The required production rate is 10 batches per hour and the vat is to be fitted with a cooling coil to remove the heat load. Calculate the flow    rate of cooling water in litres per minute if the temperature rise of water is to be no greater than 20*c

             Specific heat capacity of alloy steel = 0.48kj/kgk

             Specific heat capacity of oil = 2.1kj/kgk

             Specific heat capacity of water = 4.2kj/kgk

 

 

2. A steel bloom (a block) has a temperature after spray de scaling of 560*c. After waiting on a holding conveyor for 15 minutes the temperature has fallen to 490*c while the ambient temperature in the workshop is 30*c .

         A. Calculate the temperature after a further 30 minutes

         B. Before the blooms can be safely loaded onto transport wagons the temperature has to have fallen to 50*c how much longer will this take
