Formal Essay #1— Persuasive Argument
Assignment: Do research for and write a formal persuasive essay in which you convince an international audience that your choice of a cultural icon is a person whose work represents certain ideals, values, or verities of the culture with which you most identify. The essay must be a minimum of three paragraphs (more if you need them) and a minimum of 500 words (no more than 750, please).
What is a cultural icon? (for this particular assignment, a person)
A cultural icon, when referring to a person, is someone who is or should be easily recognized and generally represents an idea or ideas with great significance to a cultural group. It has a special status as representing, or important to, or loved by, a particular group of people.
What are ideals, values, and verities?

3.a person or thing conceived as embodying such a conception or conforming to such a standard, andtaken as a model for imitation
Values (plural noun)
1. the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. Synonyms: worth, usefulness, merit, importance, significance
2. a person's principles or standards of behavior; one's judgment of what is important in life
1. a true principle or belief, especially one of fundamental importance
2. an irrefutable truth
In Class Discussion Assignment: Get together with students with whom you share either a culture or a geographical area and discuss some historical and more modern cultural icons. Think about the international audience for your writing and who should write about which icons. Please write about different people.
